Every man and his dog has an opinion on who Manchester United should sign in January. But given the financial constraints in place caused by the debt-ridden Glazer takeover, the loss of spponsorship from Vodafone (and possibly Nike) and the loss of revenue due to an early Champions' League exit any January purchases will be from the bargain bucket. No-one expects there is even a remote hope for more than £10m to be released for transfers - unless that much is first brought in from sales.

"Sir Alex Ferguson will need to be active in the transfer market during the January shop window and the last two games against Benfica and Everton once again highlighted the problems at Old Trafford. There is little point in having two world class strikers in Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy if they are not getting the right service and the defence continues to concede sloppy goals." The actual purchases depend largely on the available budget. If it's £10m-£15m then perhaps Diop and Ben Haim would be the targets. If it's £5m - £10m then Gravesen and Ben Haim might be on the cards
